THE CREATION OF N˚1 DE CHANEL

With the  N°1 DE CHANEL line, the House of CHANEL takes a holistic approach to beauty, by grooming and preparing your skin to age gracefully. In collaboration with the University of Vienna, and after 10 years of experimentation in the field of senescence, CHANEL has brought to light the remarkable revitalising benefits of the red camellia flower extract.

PURPOSE OF N°1 DE CHANEL

CHANEL Research has observed that, beautiful skin is where all the cells are functioning at full capacity. Due to numerous aggressors caused by urban environment such as stress, UV rays and pollution, they affect and disrupt our active cells from fully functioning. Gradually, all these will be translated to the look of premature ageing and appearance of signs of age.

Hence, N°1 DE CHANEL is created to for those who falls in between their late 20s to mid 30s, where your skin does not need the SUBLIMAGE range just yet, but do need an upgrade from your oil-control and hydration range of skincare. They’re created to be easy and simple to use with a full range of skincare and makeup.

The N°1 de CHANEL formulas honor ingredients of natural origin that are renewable and have reduced environmental impact. They contain up to 97% ingredients of natural origin¹. The full range of packaging for the N°1 de CHANEL is eco-designed.

The weight of the jars and bottles has been reduced, through a streamlined design, by 30% on average for the entire N°1 de CHANEL line, and up to 50% for the Revitalizing Cream glass jar². 

80% of the products in the range are made of glass. The cream jar is refillable and patented³. The inks used to decorate the glass bottles are all organic⁴.  Lastly, all the product line lids contain recycled or bio-sourced materials.

In addition, the Revitalizing Cream lid incorporates camellia seed shells. This innovation is the result of a collaboration that begin in 2018, between the CHANEL Fragrance and Beauty Packaging Innovation Department, and Finnish startup SULAPAC.

Composed of 90% bio-sourced materials stemming from renewable resources, FSC™⁵ certified wood shavings (by-products of the paper industry) and camellia seed shells, this new-generation lid was a genuine technological challenge, at every step of its design, and is the object of several patent applications pending⁶.

4. Inks composed of molecules from organic chemistry, requiring low-temperature cooking, consuming less energy than other inks.

In my opinion, all these looks pretty sound, where CHANEL is starting to take sustainability slightly more serious and enhancing their packaging to be more eco-friendly. For now, it looks like CHANEL is focusing on 2 very obvious movement.

One is the Revitalizing Cream, where one can re-use the jar and only need to buy the refill. Another is the paper packaging with QR Code, which is great! Those thick printed books are not necessary if I’m a repeat buyer. I do hope that this movement could trickle down to the rest of the range in the future.

Here are some of the products which I tried from this range and really liked.

  1. N°1 DE CHANEL L’EAU ROUGE Revitalizing Fragrance Mist – To be honest, I’m not a fan of floral fragrances but I do like this one. It’s light and easy on the nose and it’s great for mid-day refreshes, especially if you just came back to office from a lunch break. I have it on my work desk to re-spray after meals.
  2. N°1 DE CHANEL LIP AND CHEEK BALM – If anything at all, I think this is one of the best item to have or to invest in for this range. It’s so easy to use especially for travel. You can use it on both the lips and cheek. It instantly gives me this healthy, radiance glow.
  3. N°1 DE CHANEL REVITALIZING CREAM – This makes a great day cream for me (I mean at my age now, anything more than a lotion will be good). It is not greasy and the fact that it is eco-friendly is great. Oh, don’t forget to add in the  Revitalizing Serum into your daily skincare routine as well. It gives you extra hydration and help diminish the first signs of ageing.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST

How fortunate are those who are in their 20s now where the technology for beauty is more advanced and enhanced in this era. You even have a range created to prep your skin for heavier stuff in the future, like the anti aging SUBLIMAGE range.

I wasn’t as fortunate back then. I had to go through some trials and errors with some products and slowly transitioned to the heavier stuff. During the trials, my skin was popping pimples like popcorns, due to some products being too emollient. If you fall into these age ranges, you should really seize this opportunity to give N°1 DE CHANEL a try.
