There’s always a story behind every video. Like a team of people that come together to make it a good video. It is not in this case of making the Dove haircare video. This video was made during the COVID19 quarantine.
So, there were only the videographer aka husband, and myself. Let me share some behind the scene (BTS) stories with you and what I’ve learned throughout the process of making this video. So here goes for BTS – The Making of Dove Haircare video.
EXPECTATIONS & COMMUNICATION
Let’s talk about expectations first. Of course I have my expectations when it comes to making the video because I want nothing but the best results. So, how do I get to that point to fulfill my expectations? I have to manage my expectations and communicate with my videographer.
This is where the challenging part begins. Usually, I have no issues communicating with a professional videographer. Keyword – professional videographer. In a perfect world, I’ll just briefly share my ideas with the professional videographers and they will know where to pick it up from. At the moment, I’m stuck at home with a non professional videographer and a dateline.
My way of communication have to be different this time. That’s because I’m talking to a non-professional who’s trying to meet my professional expectations. He’s my husband, I should know him well…. NO! That’s not the case. He’s my husband and unfortunately, his career is not a professional videographer.
She says: I want to have this, this and this angle. Shoot from here to here and there to here. You do multiple shots and I’ll pick few good ones to use later.
He says: Your direction is unclear! Tell me exactly where you want to shoot this?
THIS IS WORK, NOTHING PERSONAL
Did we argue? You bet we did! In the end of the day, I’ve to be logical. I don’t have to like the situation, but just need to get the job done.
You have to put your personal feelings aside. Even though he or she is your spouse, you must remember that this is work. I have a deadline to fulfill because I accepted the job. I must treat my husband like a videographer I hired, except in this case he works for free.
TAKEAWAY FROM THIS
From making this video, I’ve learned 4 things:
- How to work in challenging situations with whatever you have.
- To improve my communication skill.
- Appreciate your spouse who doesn’t have to help you with your work but still do.
- Appreciate your professional videographer!
