Christian Dior loved dance, as evidenced by the Dior archives, which contain documents illustrating his extraordinary collaboration with Roland Petit on the ballet Treize Danses, and photos of Margot Fonteyn, the dancer and House client.
Hence, for Dior Spring Summer 2019 Collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri focused and reimagined both dance and fashion. She drew inspirations from various artists and develop an idea of beauty of the body in motion. It’s a combination of a relationship with space, time and nature.
THE COLLECTION
Bodysuits, tanks and light jumpsuits become the base in this collection. It complements a series of pieces such as full and airy skirts, as well as short or long tutus. The dresses are airy with layers of tulle, while the corset has been replaced by a simple tank.
I love how the bodysuits hugs the curves and looked so sexy. Especially the netting bodysuit on Look 45 was paired with a short sleeves blazer and culottes.
“The experience of dance, its most intimate truth, the fact that it is a means of universal expression, and the radicality of the gestures of contemporary dance have all stimulated my imagination,” says Maria Grazia Chiuri
KALEIDOSCOPE MOTIF
The Kaleidoscope motif appeared as a drawing on the dancers bodysuits are beautiful! It was a tribute to Loïe Fuller’s color-soaked cinematic effects.
In the house of Dior, Kaleidoscope tie and die motif might be new but I wasn’t too thrill with this design. While some items do look relaxed and comfortable, but I see this motif a lot especially in most part of the South East Asian beach destinations. Albeit, Dior do use the best kind of quality when it comes to material.
ACCESSORIES
Seems like the Oblique collection has been expanded to a few more version now. There are some repeat designs such as Dior Book Tote and Saddle Bag. I thought the Oblique design looks good on a backpack too.
Meanwhile, most of the shoes looked comfortable to walk for miles. I had my eyes on the Grecian ribbon from foot to ankle shoes. Those ballerina shoes looked easy on the feet.
It’s not a question of bodily perfection, but of flexibility and strength of movement,” says Sharon Eyal.
