As many of you know, I love travelling! As many places I’ve been, there’s still so much more to see in this world and places which I’ve not been myself. This month, I’m kicking of a wanderlust plan called #whereareyoufrom by having at least one of my favorite blogger to introduce themselves and their homeland. I hope this will be a good insight for you to plan your next holiday. First, let’s hear from Becks and she’s from Hawaii!
1. My name is Becks and blogging from Oomph.
2. Describe your(city, country), to someone who has never been there before.
I live in Hawaii [on the island of Oahu], a tropical state where it’s practically summer year-round. Our constant 70s-80s degree weather makes it the perfect place for outdoor activities and casual attire.
3. 4 must-visit places in my city:
i. Hanauma Bay – snorkel and swim with the fishes!
ii. North shore. Drive thru Haleiwa town for some good eats and cute shopping places, then to the beach [in the winter] to see the amazing big waves. Last year we hit a record with some waves reaching 40-50 feet! Dangerous, even for a pro, but definitely a sight to see.
iii. If you want a great workout, hit up the Koko Head trail…known as the natural stair climber. With over 1,000 steps to the top, you’ll soon forget the pain when you see the view. Go earlier or later in the afternoon when it’s not as hot, take water, and wear sunscreen. Want something a little easier? Try Diamond Head.
iv. Also: Polynesian Cultural Center, Iolani Palace, Pali Lookout, Bishop Museum
4. 4 must-try food/drinks in my city/country:
i. Poi donuts from Kamehameha Bakery. Warm, sugary, and vibrant purple on the inside, these donuts are pure heaven.
ii. Hawaiian food. After all, you’re in Hawaii! Kalua pig, haupia, lau lau, lomi salmon, even poi – keep an open mind…it’s delicious! Try Helena’s or Ono’s. Or try a luau experience like Paradise Cove.
iii. Shave ice. It’s what locals crave after a day at the beach. There are a few well know places here, but my favorites are less crowded and taste much better! Try Aloha General Store in Haleiwa and get your shave ice with a scoop of ice cream with a sno-cap! Or Ice Garden, run by two cute old ladies (expect to wait), and get shave ice with mochi and custard.
iv. It really doesn’t matter what you’re drinking…if you’re enjoying it by the beach. Every restaurant/bar in Waikiki will have a signature drink. When I play tourist, I love to drink lychee martinis or chi chis (pina colada with vodka instead of rum). I recently went to Tiki’s Grill & Bar across the street from the beach which is nice because you’re up and away from the hustle and bustle. But Duke’s right on the beach is a lot of fun, too. Most beachfront hotels will have a restaurant/bar with a great view. Nothing better than a drink at sunset.
5. Areas of things to be aware of when visiting my city/country: (i.e. pickpockets, snatch thieves, etc.)
When going to the beach or hiking, never leave valuables in the car. It’s not uncommon for cars to get broken into. Other than that, Hawaii locals truly do live with aloha. We are friendly and will treat you like family….but please clean up after yourselves at the beaches/parks/hiking spots and don’t vandalize, etc. We take pride in our beautiful beaches and scenic sights and care for them so that you can enjoy them. Disrespecting the land is one sure-fire way to upset the locals.
6. 3 must-have items in my travel luggage are:
i. Jeans + Tees
ii. Sunglasses
iii. Small Crossbody Bag
