I’ve seen people with curly hair go through hours of time and pain having to manage their hair. Especially when you have really coarse and curly hair, it can be torturing.
People with curly hair wished they had straight hair. Some go through extreme lengths like getting their hair straightened. In which actually ends up damaging their natural hair. People with curly hair have to put more effort to care and nurture their mane compared to people with other hair textures like straight or wavy hair.
Often we see captions saying #curlyhairdontcare. One thing I can sincerely say is that, people with curly hair really need to care for their hair! One of the main reason is that, curly hair is often more dry and gets tangled easily.
I’ve recently written an article on maintaining fine and wavy hair. Now, let me share with you the tips to care for curly hair.
WASHING
When washing your hair, always use a shampoo that is meant for dry or damage hair. That is because curly hair is more prone to damages than straight hair. A pre wash is highly recommended which means, before you actually have your hair washed, it is advisable to have the hair wet and conditioned first to avoid tangles.
I would suggest having the conditioner rest at the ends or tangled areas of the hair for few minutes before a normal hair wash. It is also advisable not wash your hair every day because it would make the hair dry. Washing it once every couple of days or better still, once in every 3 days.
Sacha Juan hair care products was highly recommended by Yen. Their Curl-Series has been pretty popular in the market lately and it contain high protein to strengthen and treat the hair. If you’re unsure about their products, it’s always good to try the travel sizes or gift set.
DRYING
After a good hair wash, it is advisable not to towel dry your hair. Curly hair tends to get real frizzy when you do not use a soft, light material to dry it. I suggest using an old t-shirt that has a soft cotton-like fabric to keep hair frizz free. Should you need to comb your hair to detangle it, use a wide tooth comb, never a hair brush.
Use the Detangler Brush to comb when your hair’s still damp. Comb wherever necessary and do not overdo it. Remember that curly hair, do not need to be combed often. It’s only a matter of detangling the hair so that it does not get difficult when it comes to styling.
STYLING
Curly hair usually does not necessary need any blow drying. If you’re not in a situation of having to attend any event, I would strongly suggest that you just apply serum and let your hair dry naturally. Should extra styling is preferred, opt for a low-heat or cool air to blow dry your hair.
A heat protectant is essential. If you would want yours curls to look shiny and fabulous, you may want to apply a little bit of mousse starting from middle to ends of the hair. Then use the fingers and palms to scrunch the curls gently whilst blow drying it.
Some would prefer to use a flat iron to style it to their liking. Though flat ironing may cause more damage to hair, it is advisable that you do not use the flat iron directly at the tip of your hair. Whether blow drying or flat ironing, always use it at the low setting.
You can use a hairspray or styling lotion to keep your hair style lasting longer. For these, make sure that it is lightweight in texture and isn’t too harsh for your hair. Try to use a Protein Spray to strengthen your hair before blow drying.
SALON CARE
Just like caring for any type of hair, it is highly recommended to do a hair treatment at the salon at least once a month. I love the service and treatments at Toni & Guy Bangsar. If you would like to try the treatment, do use the code “DIVAINME” and you can enjoy a one time 40% off on a Kerastasé Relaxation Ritual. *Promotion ends 30th June 2018
A Kerastase Ritual takes about 45 minutes. The Hair Stylist will recommend the right ritual for your hair condition and bathe your hair with a single step mask and put you under a micro mist therapy. This ritual also include shampooing, head and shoulder massage and blow-drying your hair.
Read more about Kerastasé Relaxation Ritual on this post. For curly hair, I would highly recommend NUTRITIVE REVIVAL RITUAL – a treatment for dry to severly dried-out hair. It gives optimal nutrition from root to tip that replenishes dry hair and prolongs the nutrition result.
Last but not least, I believe that no matter your hair type, be it straight, wavy or curly hair, be proud of it. Always use products that has natural ingredients in it. The biggest rule for curly hair – always comb it when it is wet. Try not to change the original texture of your hair for it would only cause more damage than good. A healthy, well taken care hair makes a woman beautiful, after all it is said to be her crowning glory.
